75 Years of Helping People: A Timeline

Martin E. Segal (1916 – 2012), Founder

Martin E. Segal founded the Martin E. Segal Company, now The Segal Group, on October 15, 1939, in a one-room office in New York City across the street from the Empire State Building. His sister, Esther, was his first employee. In the decades since, Segal has grown to become a leading firm of benefits, compensation and human resources consultants, with nearly 1,000 employees throughout the U.S. and in Canada. Many widely accepted benefits practices were first conceived, designed and introduced by Segal. Here’s a look at some of those innovations, as well as the milestones that have spurred the firm’s growth while striving to meet the evolving needs of clients.

"As we move forward, we will maintain our short term and long term view of our business and the world. We will continue to put our clients first while recognizing that our people are our best assets. And we will continue to adapt to change, a strong trait of our firm that has allowed us to be successful for 75 years."
— Joseph A. LoCicero, President & CEO of The Segal Group
